Jonah Roll's paintings can be defined as contemporary surrealism as he often takes the viewer to a superior reality created by the absence of controlled reason. Daily at dawn is Roll's most productive and creative period as he is inspired by his still vivid dreams and the dictation of his unconsciousness. His work is suffused with imagery imbedded in an original and stylized reality, that is often peopled with characters that range from the grotesque to the majestic. Juxtaposition of distant realities and turquoise glow are constants in his work. Roll's ideas are influenced by the memories of his childhood in Honolulu, Hawaii where he was raised in a 45-foot sailboat named, The Flying Warrus.
Roll received a Bachelor of Fine Arts in printmaking from the Pacific Northwest College of Art in Portland, Oregon.
